Newcon Cosplay Contest

Portland has a brand new convention this year called Newcon. It’s happening the weekend of New Year’s Eve, hence the name. I am planning on attending and I’m really excited about it!

Newcon announced that they will be having a cosplay contest and the winner will receive a free badge, so I entered! This is my first cosplay contest ever. I thought I would start small by doing a local online one. I entered my Morrigan Aensland costume, please vote for it here! All you have to do is “like” the photo in the Newcon photo album on Facebook.

I probably could have picked a sexier pose. But I though this photo was cute and I like how you can see some more details of the costume in this one than you can in a lot of my other photos.

Since I haven’t really blogged about this costume too much, I figured now would be a good time to go into the details:

The bodice and the wings of my costume are completely made from scratch. I draped/drafted my own pattern for the bodice and fitted it to me. It’s boned, fully lined and zips up the back. The wings are wonderflex over a base I sculpted out of cardboard and tin foil. I also hand painted the wings. It was pretty tricky getting them stay on my head successfully, but the second contraption I built works perfectly and is comfortable to wear. I was really concerned with making sure I didn’t have a headband over my wig and that the wings actually looked like they were coming straight out from the wig. Oh and my wig is from Cyperous. It was definitely worth the price, I think it looks awesome in photos and it doesn’t tangle that much considering how long it is.

The other parts of the costume are modified. The tights are from We Love Colors and I painted the bats on using a stencil I made. I cut up the top of the boots and re-sewed it so that it has a V shape in the front. My sleeves are made from a pair of tights and the feather straps were made from a feather boa that I conveniently got at a Naked Lady Party some odd months ago.

So there go, I hope you’ll vote for my costume! There are tons of other great cosplayers who have already entered too, so definitely check out the rest of the album! And also, you should like the Newcon page to stay updated on what they’re planning for this winter!

Interesting use of WONDERFLEX on those wings.

Thanks! I’m really new to using it. I looked up tutorials on YouTube and kind of went from there. If you have any tips I would love to hear them 🙂
